Paul Gallen defeated Justin Hodges by unanimous decision in his final professional boxing fight to round out his legendary sporting career on a dream note.

The Origin rivals contested an enthralling encounter over six two-and-a-half-minute rounds, with the judges scoring the fight 60-54, 60-54, 59-55.

The victory improved Gallen's professional boxing record to 15-2-1 and marked his second win against Hodges in two months.

Speaking post-fight, Gallen said he had no incentive to keep putting his body on the line in the ring.

"I don't know what's going to motivate me anymore, I really don't," he said.

"I went into this sport at the start for the money - I told you all from the start I'm here for a payday - and I've done really well and I don't know what else there is to do.

"There's no other fight that I want, there is no amount of money that's going to get me motivated like I was, so it's time to finish.

"I wanted to go out a winner and I've done that."

Paul Gallen made relatively light work of former State of Origin opponent Ben Hannant, winning on points over four rounds.

It was the first of two fights for Gallen in a radical double fight night in Brisbane, where he also beat Justin Hodges on points after dismantling Hannant.

And while Gallen had plenty of praise for Hodges at the end of the night, it was actually Hannant who "surprised" the heavyweight slugger.

"Benny Hannant surprised me a bit more than Hodgo - Hodgo is an athlete, have a look at him," Gallen said.

"He didn't shock me with what he could do, but Benny Hannant shocked me a little bit."

Paul Gallen got into the ring at Nissan Arena against his former Queensland State of Origin foe, Justin Hodges.

The pair had engaged in a bitter war of words in the build-up, and certainly threw everything at one another when in the ring, with Gallen earning a unanimous points win.

Hodges, though, did drop Gallen, who later admitted he had never felt such a force during a fight, not even against Justis Huni who pummelled Gallen over 10 rounds and forced a stoppage.

"I think that's the first time I've been put down by a shot that it absolutely stunned me, and rocked my brain," Gallen said.

"He got me fair and square, man, it took me five seconds to get up and make sure I was OK, suck some deep breaths in. So good shot, whatever that was, I'll watch it back."

They might have belted each other for 10 rounds and thrown some verbal bombs in the lead up, but there was nothing but respect, as the two men shared a couch after Kris Terzievski's dominant performance that ended in a unanimous points victory over Paul Gallen.

"I could feel Kris getting more confident each day. I watched him in the media, I actually thought he got to the point where he was getting a bit cocky to be honest," Gallen said.

"I was hoping I was going to be able to catch up with him today to let him know that."

Terzievski joked that all the insults leading into the fight gave him the edge.

"I reckon if you didn't call me a soft c--k, you would have got me," he added.

Gallen responded: "Let's be honest, it doesn't matter what you say before a fight, are you gonna punch me any less harder?"

"Exactly right," Terzievski responded.

Paul Gallen scored a second round TKO victory over Darcy Lussick but it was an early illegal move that seemed to kick the former Sharks captain into action.

Lussick made things difficult for Gallen in the first round which stifled his attack, capitalising on an "illegal" move according to Jeff Fenech.

"It's illegal. He's holding around the head and hitting. This is absurd what we're watching," Fenech told Main Event.

While the tactic worked in the first round, it appeared to spark a more aggressive reaction from Gallen in the second, where he quickly gained ascendancy, responding with an uppercut and another shot that sent Lussick to the canvas.

Lussick got up but it was the beginning of the end as Gallen took control, forcing the referee's hand.

Paul Gallen was in trouble early against Justis Huni, thanks to body blows like this from the Australian heavyweight champion.

"I think he broke my rib in about the second round. I just couldn't get off, every time I moved it kept clicking," Gallen said post-fight.

Gallen went into the fight believing that Huni could not threaten him with one-punch knockout power but may eventually be able to deliver a stoppage with a combination. In the 10th and final round, he was ultimately proven right.

Justis Huni punches Paul Gallen during their Australian heavyweight title fight at ICC Sydney. Gallen was remarkably courageous and did his utmost to fire back, yet Huni picked him off for most of the fight and gave the NRL great little chance. Still, Gallen kept coming. "Paul Gallen, what a ticker you've got. What an engine," Aussie boxing legend Jeff Fenech enthused on Main Event's fight commentary. Huni later remarked: "He's an awesome competitor, very tough, very strong." Gallen himself said: "He was too fast and probably punched a little bit harder than I thought he was going to punch as well. I just wanted to get through the fight but he was too good tonight."

Paul Gallen tackles Justis Huni during their Australian heavyweight title fight at ICC Sydney. It was a last-gasp act of desperation, closely followed by Huni's stoppage victory. "There is a rematch clause but I hope Gallen doesn't want it," Jeff Fenech said on Main Event's fight commentary. "He doesn't need this again, you can have all the money in the world but you don't need this." Main Event panellist Paul Kent branded Gallen "too brave for his own good", adding: "The fact is, I wouldn't like to see him fight anymore. I don't think he can go any higher than where he went tonight. He certainly doesn't want any better opponents than what Justis Huni gave him tonight."

Paul Gallen is dropped by Justis Huni midway through the 10th round of their Australian heavyweight title fight, for his first loss in boxing. It was an awkward moment - while Huni delivered a heavy right hand, it coincided with Gallen slipping on the centre-ring decal, giving him no chance of recovery and condemning him to an ugly fall to the canvas. Gallen was genuinely stunned, on top of nine prior rounds of punishment, yet got to his feet in an attempt to finish the fight. Referee John Cauchi waved-off the bout and it was done, despite Gallen protesting: "I'm good!" He said post-fight: "I want to win. I'm as competitive person there is. By the sixth or seventh round I knew I wasn't going to win it I just wanted to finish it. While he knocked me down fair and square, I thought the referee stopped it early; but I was never going to win the fight." Aussie boxing legend Jeff Fenech was in awe of Gallen's steel will. "How tough is Paul Gallen, I can't believe it. He was gone and he wanted to get up and fight again. Amazing."

Paul Gallen sits in his corner after losing to Justis Huni in their Australian heavyweight title fight. The NRL great sustained way more damage from Huni than in any other fight, copping relentless heavy blows to both the head and body. He has a rematch clause, yet Australian boxing great Barry Michael urged him to retire at age 39. "Personally, I don't want to see Gal take rematches and stuff like that," Michael said on Main Event. "He's made a real good quid, he's proved so many things to himself and a lot of other people. A great achievement to go into the last minute of the 10th round. Incredible. You've got nothing to prove, that was an incredible effort tonight against a far more skillful, much bigger guy that's going to the Olympics and is a big chance to bring us a gold medal."
