The Rio Olympics 2016 opening ceremony
Let the Games begin!
The start of the XXXI Olympiad has erupted in a dazzling display of colour, noise and wonder for the opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Thousands of fans packed the famous old arena to celebrate the end of a years-long build-up that has been mired in controversy.
And even though protestors were still making their voices heard throughout the ceremony, the atmosphere inside was one of jubilation with artists, dancers and actors wowing the crowd.
