Noemie Fox has upstaged her gold-medal-winning sister, Jess, as both siblings cruised into the elimination round of the women's kayak cross.

Jess took second place in her heat before Noemie stormed home once her number was called, crossing the finish line while her three opponents were stuck battling each other at the final upstream gate.

While the results were good enough for both sisters to make it into Monday morning's (AEST) elimination heats without having to worry about the repechage round, Noemie admitted there was one part of her race she needed to improve.

"I really was calm and collected at the start, Jess told me I looked bored," she joked afterwards.

"I was, I thought, more focused. But I'll have to work on my game face."

She also saw plenty of benefit to coming out of a difficult race in first place.

"It was a really challenging heat," Noemie said.

"I was looking on the paper yesterday and it felt like I had the hardest heat out there, but it kind of set the tone for the standard of the racing here and at least I know what to expect moving through the rounds."

Earlier in the session, Jess could only manage a second-place finish behind Germany's Elena Lilik.

The two had been even in the opening stage of the race, but the German made a much better fist of the barrel roll and first upstream gate to leave Fox behind.
