Grae Morris grabs Australia's first windsurfing medal in decades with silver in men's final

Grae Morris has fallen short of winning Australia's 13th gold medal of Paris 2024, claiming silver in the men's windsurfing in choppy and windy conditions in Marseilles.

While the final had been postponed from day seven due to a lack of wind, there were no such weather issues on Saturday, although a false start had caused a slight delay to the medal race.

The three racers had jostled in the early stages of the decider, with Morris passing the first mark narrowly in the lead, although Israel's Tom Reuveny was less than a second behind.

It was the same margin after the upwind leg of the race, only for Reuveny to then streak ahead of Morris and claim gold – Israel's first of Paris 2024.

Morris finished five seconds in arrears, with Luuc van Opzeeland of the Netherlands a further five seconds back.

It's Australia's first windsfuring medal since 1992, and there were fitting celebrations when Morris reached the shore, with the Sydneysider chaired out of the water with an inflatable boxing kangaroo bobbing behind him.

At just 20 years old, Morris has plenty more Olympic campaigns in store, and said he's relishing the thought of doing it all again in four years' time.

"That was awesome," he told Nine from the Marseilles Marina.

"The best racing we've ever done. It was sick...

"I was so excited. Even halfway through the race, I was stoked. It was so much fun.

"Yeah, just can't wait to do it again... there's plenty coming up. So this is not the end, that's for sure."

The Australian had gone into the final as the top-ranked boat in the opening series, giving him direct progress to the podium.

While that meant he hadn't risked elimination in the quarter- and semi-finals, it also denied him a race earlier on Saturday, whereas Reuveny and van Opzeeland had both already got their feet wet in the knockout rounds before the decider.

But Morris had nothing but praise for his two fellow medallists.

"(Reuveny) did a great job keeping it all together and pulling it off in the end," he said.

"He's awesome. I love that guy. He's done so well and I'm so happy to see him up on number one.

"And same as Luuc there. They're just great guys and I'm so happy I get to share it with them."
