Heated altercation after 5000m heat as disastrous collision takes British runner out

The men's 5000m event descended into utter chaos as a disastrous collision sparked a fiery altercation between two athletes.

Team GB's George Mills and France's Hugo Hay were at the centre of the dispute, which was ignited by the mishap of Canada's Mohammed Ahmed in the final leg of the race.

Ahmed tripped in the middle of the pack on the final bend, causing athletes to disperse across the floor as others frantically charged towards the finish line.

Mills, who was drawn to the ground during the incident, bumped two athletes on his descent, with Hay the first to be knocked by the Brit. 

Hay remained upright as his rival hit the track, allowing him to cement his spot in the final with a seventh place finish.

But his success had clearly hit a nerve for Mills, who confronted the Frenchman after the race.

Hay's efforts to reconcile with Mills were ignored as the 25-year-old shoved and pointed at his rival.

Earlier, athletes were forced to dodge an oblivious cameraman who walked onto the track as the field was coming around the bend.

"Oh dear, he just wandered out in the middle of nowhere," Gerard Whateley said in commentary on Nine.

"Good grief. Man. That's where the javelin is - and just no awareness whatsoever of what was going on.

"These 5000s have been crazy!"
