The Mole: 'Sick and tired' Tigers sponsor urges NRL battlers to extend Lachlan Galvin for 10 years

A Wests Tigers sponsor is pushing the club to sign budding superstar Lachlan Galvin on a record 10-year deal.

Galvin, the best new face to emerge in the NRL in 2024, is only 19 and has two years left on his current Tigers contract.

But that means that rival clubs can talk to him this time next year - and that is what businessman and lifelong Tigers fan Frank Micali wants to avoid.

"I'm sick and tired of seeing the Tigers produce these great kids and then lose them to cashed up clubs," Micali, who runs a chain of gourmet doughnut franchises around Sydney, told Wide World of Sports.

"Lachlan is a once in a generation player and a great kid who I've known since he was at Westfields Sports High School.

"People close to the club are already worried about losing him and have come to me.

"I'm happy to provide a third party sponsorship and hopefully the club can work out a deal with his manager. They know where to find me - I used to work for the Tigers and know a lot of people there.

"They can build a team around Lachlan that can challenge for the premiership - that's how good a player he will become."

Earlier this year there was talk of Galvin going to Penrith after the Tigers signed Panthers superstar Jarome Luai.

The Panthers ended up signing rising Eels utility Blaize Talagi but for a while, there was a real danger that Galvin would leave.

The Bulldogs are on the verge of clinching a ground-breaking deal with Fiji that will see the island nation's best young players link up with the Bulldogs pathways.

Canterbury boss Phil Gould is currently in Nadi finalising negotiations that will result in the Kaiviti Silktails joining the Bulldogs family as a feeder club.

The Silktails feature the cream of young Fijian talent and play in the NSWRL's Jersey Flegg Cup.

Coached by long-serving NRL star Wes Naiqama, they finished in last spot on the ladder this year but gained invaluable experience through playing against the best young players in New South Wales.

"It's an exciting time for both the Bulldogs and Fijian rugby league," Gould told Wide World of Sports.

'ILL FEELING' BETWEEN STAR PLAYERS

The pair were at odds on the field during the club's poor 2024 campaign, often both demanding the ball and not agreeing on or off the field.

The ill feeling got so heated that at season's end, the playmaker boycotted the club's Mad Monday celebrations.

The drama shows no signs of dying down over the summer, leaving the coach with some massive fences to mend to bring the two together again.

TEENAGE PROSPECT DITCHES LEAGUE

NRL clubs have missed out on a fine prospect in Brisbane GPS star Tyler Maybery.

Maybery, who was coached by former dual international and Broncos forward Brad Thorn at Brisbane Boys College this season, has opted to join the famous Randwick Rugby Club in Sydney.

The 18-year-old captained the school and averaged two tries a game against strong GPS opposition.

"He's a powerful back-rower and may have been good at league but comes from a South African family and they love their rugby union," Maybery's manager Brendan Underwood told Wide World of Sports.

"Randwick will be a great fit for him."
