State of Origin I teams: Laurie Daley explains why he elected against Cleary-Luai reunion; Billy Slater explains surprise selection calls as three debutants named for game one

Daley was asked at the end of his presser whether he "hates" Queensland.

"Hate is a strong word ... I respect Queensland," he said.

He then promised the team would be even better prepared than the one Michael Maguire took to Suncorp and won last year's series.

Some expected Terrell May to get the call up to make his debut in the pack, but he revealed last week he would not be playing.

"I just think the others are playing better (than him)," Daley said bluntly.

"Max King is outstanding ... Terrell just needs to keep knocking on the door. His time will come."

He later said he had not spoken to May, and his comments online last week did not concern him.

Jarome Luai was another notable omission, with Mitchell Moses picked at No.6 to partner Nathan Cleary.

"I just feel that Mitch is in great form," Daley said.

"He and Nathan can combine really well. Kicking games in Origin are so important and we've got two of the best kickers in the game.

"Mitch is great with his communication, got a great running game, all the qualities he needs to be great at six."

Tom Trbojevic was a notable omission from his game one side, but Daley has "no doubt" he'll be back.

"Everyone agrees Tom, if he's fit, is one of the best players in the game, so that was a tough decision," he said.

"We're comfortable with everyone we've selected in the outside backs. Tom needs to go back and play some good football and be confident. I have no doubt Tom will be back in this arena at some point."

Daly actually started a touch early, and was asked about Payne Haas straight away.

"Getting a scan this morning ... once we find out the results, we'll work out where we go from there," he said.

"He's one of the best front rowers in the game, (but) Origin tosses up a lot of things. If he's ruled out, he's ruled out."

And now we wait for Laurie Daley, who will speak to media from the NSWRL centre of excellence at Sydney Olympic Park.

Slater wrapped up his presser with a brief chat about the Blues and the stacked team they've named.

"I don't there are any surprises in their team, it was always going to be strong," he said.

"We will work out what strengths they bring to the game and try to defend that as best we can.

"But the best form of defence is attack. If we get our game on, that takes a lot of their strengths away from them ... certainly not ignorant or disrespectful to the opposition. We are not naïve to know what we're up against."

The Knights, and fullback Kalyn Ponga, have been far from their best this season, and Slater is "excited" by the "challenge" of returning him back to his full form.

"I played that position and I love what Kalyn brings to a footy team," he said.

"Helping him be at his best is something that excites me. That's something I'm looking forward to."

Robert Toia will have the unenviable task of marking Latrell Mitchell in the series-opener. Slater said he had no concerns whether or not he was up to the task.

"He's stood up every time he's played, he's been one of the more consistent players for the Roosters," he said.

"Playing in the centres, it is man on man, but it's a system and he is a good system player. He's got some good strengths and they will need to defend him as well.

"Hopefully we can bring him into the game... hopefully he's going to get some good ball in good situations and be pretty dangerous himself."
