Shaun Johnson isn't an NRL player anymore, but he is still a Test footballer.

The halfback returns to the New Zealand Kiwis jersey on Sunday afternoon against the Kangaroos after making a retirement backflip.

The Warriors' last regular round match was meant to be his final rugby league game until Kiwis coach Stacey Jones came calling.

The first call was declined but when Jahrome Hughes was ruled out through injury, Johnson couldn't help himself.

"This is just pure enjoyment, this is the bonus minutes, I never planned on being here," he told 9News Sydney.

Johnson's backflip on his rugby league retirement then brings another question.

What would it take to backflip on his NRL decision?

"There's nothing in the world that could get me back in the NRL," he smiled.

Johnson then cautiously added: "Actually I shouldn't say that, because I also said I wouldn't be doing this."

The clash between the Kiwis and Kangaroos will be the first time they've played since New Zealand won the Pacific Championships final 30-0 under former coach Michael Maguire.

New Zealand will showcase a new-look spine with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad at five-eighth and Keano Kini playing fullback. Phoenix Crossland is the hooker with Johnson at halfback.
