Youngster Lailani Montgomery hits last-minute penalty goal to seal victory for Indigenous All Stars as injuries hit both sides

The All Stars match is always an anxious time for club coaches hoping to have players avoid injury and the afternoon's women's match was no different on Saturday as the Indigenous side won in the final minute.

In the first half, Bulldogs signing Ash Quinlan and Cowboys half Kirra Dibb both left the field with concerns after two incidents only seconds apart from each other.

Quinlan copped friendly fire from her teammate Jasmin Strange in a tackle and departed with a towel over her face.

Dibb was next to leave when her knee was twisted in a tackle.

"This is very, very awkward for Kirra Dibb," Ruan Sims said on Nine's broadcast.

Dibb was later seen in a moon boot and with crutches which will no doubt concern her Cowboys teammates and coaches. However, there was some relief for the Maori All-Stars with Quinlan later returning to the field.

The injuries didn't stop with Indigenous All-Stars back Bobbi Law leaving the field following a hip drop tackle in the second half which led to Tiana Raftstrand-Smith being sin binned.

The match started with the Indigenous side flying out of the blocks, taking a 10-0 lead with tries to Monique Donovan and Jaime Chapman.

Chanté Temara was first to score for the Maori All-Stars in the 18th minute and from there the tries flowed with Laikha Clarke and Lilly-Ann White also crossing the line. At half time, the Maori team led 18-12.

Straight after the break, Ella Koster scored for the Indigenous women before a penalty goal to Lailani Montgomery in the 53rd minute made it 18-18.

The match then went down to the wire with young gun Montgomery attempting a field goal in the dying seconds.

Montgomery's attempt was thwarted with the referee judging she'd knocked the ball on after it.

However, the Indigenous team challenged and upon review it was revealed that Quinlan had connected with the foot of Montgomery during her field goal attempt, gifting a penalty right in front of the posts.

Montgomery then kicked the goal to deliver a thrilling 20-18 win.

"Amazing contest," caller Brenton Speed said on Nine.
