'Didn't want him to go': Adam O'Brien's admission on winger as Dom Young's move to Newcastle looms

The Newcastle Knights will be eligible to select Dominic Young as soon as next week as Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirms the young star's departure.

An official announcement on the mid-season transfer has yet to be made by either club but both team coaches confirmed they were aware of the unfolding situation.

"I think it will get cleared up tomorrow," Robinson told reporters in his post-match press conference on Saturday when asked about Young's future.

"It is pretty clear that he will be up here (in Newcastle) from Monday."

The Englishman has been frequenting reserve grade in recent weeks after being dropped out of the starting squad by Robinson in round 11.

He was recalled the following week against the Sharks as a result of Robert Toia's absence due to State of Origin commitments.

But Young is now set to return to the club he first debuted with in 2021.

Adam O'Brien admitted that he was unable to discuss where the contract matter was at but did insist that the playing group would welcome Young with open arms on arrival.

"Absolutely I will. Didn't want him to go in the first place," O'Brien said when asked about Young's pending arrival.

"Hopefully next week we are talking about maybe selecting him if he is available for selection. Obviously, we will have Bradman (Best) and Tyson (Gamble)... we have some help coming next week in terms of experience.

"But right now, I'm just super proud of our kids."

Knights skipper Dane Gagai said he had yet to consider the arrival of Young.

"I'm going to be cliche but I don't look that far ahead," he said.

"I'm just focused on getting into the top eight.

"If he comes here we will welcome him with open arms, but we just need to get back to winning footy games, whether its pretty or not."
