Reece Walsh's reveals his dad's never seen before tears after inspiring Kangaroos debut

Reece Walsh has opened up on the emotional messages he received before making his Kangaroos debut after inspiring the side to victory against England.

Walsh's heroics in the first Ashes Test meant his stocks rose even higher after the brilliance of Brisbane's grand final triumph earlier this month.

The fullback revealed his departure from Australia and in the lead up to the match involved a number of tear-jerking moments.

"I'm really proud, I'm getting a little bit emotional," he told 9News Sydney.

"When I left, I've never seen my old man cry before. He shed some tears there and said 'go make your family proud, go make your country proud'.

"I'm really honoured to be here, wearing these colours, it means a lot to myself and my family."

With the match wrapping up in the early hours in Australia, Walsh was asked what his father would be doing at the time.

His response: "probably blind at home".

"He messaged me before the game, and they said they're all proud of me," he said before adding his daughter messaged him too but wasn't staying up for the 12.30am (AEDT) kick off on Sunday morning.

Walsh finished the match with two tries, two line breaks, 243 run metres and five tackle breaks, as well as saving a number of potential England tries.

His teammate, Cameron Munster, put it down to how fast the fullback is.

"Speed kills, he's got a heap of it in his kit bag, I wish he'd give a bit to me," he said.
