'Best of the best': Cameron Smith's big admission on Kangaroos role amid Mal Meninga's impending departure

League legend Cameron Smith has denied he's had any approaches to coach the Kangaroos but has admitted it's a job that interests him.

Mal Meninga has yet to be confirmed as the new Perth Bears coach, but reports suggest it's a done deal.

That leaves the Kangaroos job open with the ARLC hoping to have a new coach for the upcoming Ashes tour.

On Nine's 100% Footy, Smith said "no one's approached me", but confessed there's an allure to the job.

"A lot of people have asked me at the back end of my career when I retired, 'would you ever coach?'," he continued.

"I emphatically said no (but) if there was one team out there that it would gain my interest to coach, it would be the Kangaroos. You're dealing with the best of the best.

"As far as the calendar's concerned when those commitments occur, it's at the end of the year, so that works in with my commitments with commentary."

Smith's name has been floated along with Kevin Walters and Brad Fittler. Veteran journalist Andrew Webster also mentioned Wayne Bennett on SEN last week.

League icon Phil Gould said Smith would fit the bill considering his 56 Tests for the Kangaroos.

"It's not an easy level to coach but it's best if you had experience," he said.
