Broncos second-rower Brendan Piakura has been dealt a two-game ban after laying a high shot on Wests Tigers prop Terrell May during Brisbane's 46-24 win on Saturday.

The match review committee handed down a grade two careless high tackle charge.

Piakura will be sidelined for two games if he accepts an early guilty plea but three matches if he fights the charge at the judiciary and loses.

It was the 22-year-old's second offence on record.

Referee Liam Kennedy sent Piakura to the sin bin for the 20th-minute incident at Suncorp Stadium, which was in line with the NRL's latest crackdown on foul play.

The league sent an email to all club chief executives and football managers after round three, stating there were four occasions where the sin bin was not used "for incidents involving direct, forceful contact with the head/neck of opponents".

"Clubs should expect the required standard to be implemented throughout the remainder of the season," the statement said.

"A further matter of concern so far this season has been the increased incidence of shoulder-to-head contact by defenders. This is a tackling technique issue that needs to be addressed, and players must lower their target area to avoid the risk of contact with the head/neck of opponents."

Even if Piakura hadn't been banned, he was set to miss at least one game having failed a head injury assessment after colliding with Tigers lock Alex Twal.

Piakura was stretchered from the field in the dying minutes of the game.
