Michael Maguire set to make Brisbane Broncos captaincy call next year

New Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has refused to guarantee Adam Reynolds the captaincy for the 2025 season, despite the veteran playmaker reportedly being favourite to retain the role.

With the Broncos and the rest of the NRL back at preseason training, there are claims Reynolds could be in his last season in the competition.

He played 13 games last season and at 34 some at Red Hill believe Maguire will look to the future when analysing his leadership group.

That's not to say that Reynolds is not a front-runner for the role but he may also play a mentoring role to the future leader of the team.

It's understood Kangaroos forward Pat Carrigan is viewed a future captain of the club, while Ben Hunt's return gives Maguire another option, after captaining St George Illawarra.

Maguire said he's had experience with Reynolds' leadership at South Sydney and will make a decision regarding the title in the new year.

"As a captain he has had to go through a bit and he's copped some stick, but he will be out there showing exactly who he is when he's playing," Maguire said.

"We will discuss (the captaincy). Reyno is a leader. I've had a lot of great experiences with Reyno but we want some more.

"How that leadership and captaincy of the team looks, we will discuss that throughout January.

"There's some things I will be doing with the team but he is a very good leader."

Reynolds said he's happy to continue in the role but if club bosses wanted to go in another direction "that's their choice".

Reynolds and Maguire combined to win South Sydney's premiership in 2014, ending a 43-year drought for the foundation club.

Since Maguire's appointment, the club has re-signed fullback Reece Walsh and lured veteran playmaker Ben Hunt back to the club.

But they will need to find a way to keep Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo beyond 2025 as rival clubs circle the off-contract pair.

It's said Maguire wants both Origin players to stay and both players have indicated they want to stay.

However, salary cap pressure could make it hard for the club to keep both.
