Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar has had a nightmare start to his Formula 1 career after crashing out of the Australian Grand Prix before the race began.

Heavy rain throughout the day in Melbourne added an extra layer of difficulty for all racing on Sunday, with the 20-year-old debutant the first victim of the greasy conditions.

Hadjar was left heartbroken as he spun out at turn two on the formation lap, which caused the start to be aborted.

The young gun was supposed to start from 11th on the grid. Visibly emotional, Hadjar dropped his head into his hands as officials worked to clear the car.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and Lewis Hamilton's father, Anthony, were seen consoling Hadjar after the incident.

"It means a lot that he knew where I was," Hadjar told media including Wide World of Sports of his embrace with Hamilton senior.

"He knew how bad I felt, and to see me in the worst moment ever was nice of him. I really appreciate that.

"He told me to keep my head high and be proud of myself."

The Frenchman admitted that he was "embarrassed" to have failed to race in first grand prix.

"These mistakes can happen," he said.

"But just breaking the car so early in the season breaks my heart.

"I'm missing out on more experience, it's my first grand prix, racing on a wet track... I wish I could be driving now.

"I'm embarrassed and sorry for the team.

"I just overdid it and over slipped the rears.... I didn't see it coming."

The aborted start means the race will be reduced by one lap.

When the race got under way, Aussie Jack Doohan and Carlos Sainz both crashed out on the opening lap.
