McIlroy and Wozniacki in shock split
An emotional Rory McIlroy has announced he has broken off his engagement and split with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, only days after sending out their wedding invitations.
The 25-year-old Northern Irishman and two-time major champion said the issuing of the invitations had made him aware that he was not ready for marriage.
Their shock split comes just weeks after they were pictured kissing and giggling together at the US Masters.
McIlroy and Wozniacki were arguably sport's highest profile couple.
They started dating as their respective careers skyrocketed.
Wozniacki became the world's number one female tennis player.
McIlroy also topped the rankings in men's golf.
McIlroy announced their split via a statement, saying the problem was his.
"There's no right way to end a relationship that's been so important to two people," he said.
"The wedding invitations..made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails".
It was only weeks ago that Wozniacki appeared tickled pink - literally - about her man.
She sported a bright new hair colour as she joined Rory at the US Masters.
