Giant batsman steals show at Cup party
A giant batsman, weighing 150 kilograms and operated by four people, has stolen the show in a trans-Tasman celebration to kick-off the Cricket World Cup.
The illuminated figure towered over entertainers at Melbourne's famed Sidney Myer Music Bowl, where members of the Australian cricket team were joined by dignatories, fans and rival players for a two-part opening ceremony.
Tournament co-host New Zealand had earlier played its part with a celebration that centred on music and dance.
The giant batsman was created to symbolise every competing nation.
The virtual hit came complete with a thud that echoed across the Melbourne.
It triggered a fireworks spectacular across the entire city.
The sight helped kick-start a six-week celebration for the sport.
Songstress Jessica Mauboy was herself a huge hit with fans.
As was emerging star Nathaniel Willemse.
World Cup matches will be played in 14 host cities.
Victoria's Premier said it was an honour for Melbourne to host the opening ceremony.
Melbourne will also host the final at the MCG.
