Newcastle United were booed off St. James’ Park after losing to Everton for the second time in four days on Tuesday (AEDT).

Thierno Barry’s 49th-minute tap-in proved decisive in Everton’s 1-0 away win after beating Newcastle 3-1 in the League Cup in Liverpool.

Victory lifted Everton to seventh in the Premier League while Newcastle are 13th and have lost four of their last five games across all competitions.

Newcastle’s woes deepened when Jacob Ramsey was sent off in added time.

The midfielder came off the bench in the second half and picked up two yellow cards within 79 seconds of each other.

“I don’t think he can complain either,” Michael Owen said on Stan Sport’s post-game coverage.

“This (second challenge on Harrison Armstrong) is bordering on red alone, I would suggest. There’s a bit of force, it’s definitely over the ball. I mean there’s no question at all, it’s a yellow card.

“I think the debate is whether it’s a straight red or not, but, whichever way Ramsey deserved to see his marching orders and quite extraordinary to come on and get a red card in such quick succession.”

Barry scored after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček failed to deal with a shot from Tyrique George.

The pressure is now intensifying on Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, who has failed to produce an effective style of football in his first season in charge.

Newcastle captain Dan Burn said he could understand the fans booing but said it was making matters worse.

“I don’t think it makes it any easier,” Burn said.

“If I’m being perfectly honest, you can feel the nervousness of the crowd when you’re out there, and I don’t think that helps lads perform at any stage.

“But we’re a passionate fan base. I’ve been a fan there, in the stands myself, so I completely understand it. I don’t think it’s helping, but I can also understand that if we’re not getting the results and not putting in a performance that the crowd are happy with, they’re well within their reasons to do that. But it doesn’t help.”

Meanwhile, Everton manager David Moyes was tight-lipped about Jack Grealish’s status with the club, simply saying he was “unavailable” for selection against Newcastle.

The star midfielder was dropped for the League Cup clash against Newcastle for disciplinary reasons, having missed training without permission.

Grealish also missed the previous match against Arsenal, with Everton citing illness.
