England completely 'destroyed' as Australia retains the Ashes inside 11 days

The Ashes have been retained by Australia in 11 days after the series was sealed at the Adelaide Oval in a comprehensive 82-run victory.

It comes after Broad had described the home side as "the worst Australian team since 2010" before the series started.

England started day five at the Adelaide Oval at 6-207, needing 228 runs to win.

Will Jacks and Jamie Smith combined for another 78 runs to give England hope before Smith had a brain snap and slogged a Mitchell Starc delivery in the air to Pat Cummins.

Ricky Ponting described the shot as "dopey" on Seven with Smith walking off for 60.

Jacks and Brydon Carse led England to lunch and looked like they'd give the side hope as the Barmy Army went from bare to full.

But another Marnus Labuschagne one-handed screamer off Starc's bowling sent Jacks packing for 47 off 137 balls.

Starc had another when Jofra Archer was caught by Jake Weatherald in the deep for 3.

Scott Boland took the final wicket with Josh Tongue edging to Labuschagne as the hosts bowled England out for 352.

"They've been destroyed by the men in baggy greens," caller Mark Howard said on Fox.

England went into the Adelaide Test knowing victory was essential to winning The Ashes, with Australia the holders of the urn.

Perth was a two-day nightmare after England went from a very winnable position to losing by eight wickets.

Brisbane was a four-day affair, won by the same margin despite Joe Root scoring his first century in Australia.

In Adelaide, England barely looked like a chance with hundreds to Alex Carey and Travis Head proving the difference.

Starc, Cummins and Nathan Lyon all took three wickets each while Boland grabbed one.

Carey was named player of the match.
