Alex Carey reveals story behind Nathan Lyon's new nickname after stump mic leak

ADELAIDE: Nathan Lyon has just gone from dropped to chasing Shane Warne in the space of one Test and the whole debacle has earned him a new nickname.

Lyon said he was "filthy" during the Gabba Test when asked about being dropped, and when he was bowling on day four at Adelaide, the Australian voices were easy to pick up.

"Big filthy," was the name heard or just "filthy".

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey explained in the post-match press conference that there was no way his Gabba quotes were getting past the team.

"I think he might've used the word last week, didn't he?," he smiled.

"If you say something in this cricket team, you don't get missed. He's very much loved around the group and takes it with a big smile on his face. He's bowling beautifully."

Lyon has kept his cards close to his chest since the "filthy" interview and was quite guarded when speaking at his press conference earlier in the Test.

The off-spinner would've been anything but filthy with his performance late on day four, dismissing Harry Brook, Ben Stokes and Zak Crawley.

England had forged a mini fightback against Australia and were giving themselves a fighting chance when Brook and Crawley were in.

However, Lyon's rampage left England six wickets down at stumps. The spell now means Australia has close to two hands on the urn.

The Stokes dismissal looked to be a stroke of genius from Carey, who had gone up to Lyon earlier and had a conversation. Fox Cricket's cameras also spotted Carey gesturing outside of off stump.

Lyon then produced a beautiful off-spinning delivery, pitching on middle and hitting the top of off stump. Stokes tried to push forward but was stuck on the crease and on his way to the pavilion.

Lyon pointed straight to Carey after the wicket, with the two sharing a big hug.

The keeper was keeping his cards close to his chest when asked about what he said.

"Just continue to keep the energy throughout the day, he likes to be reminded about where he bowls on the crease, and I thought he was bowling really well," he said.

"When he's just focusing on his best ball, [that] is when he bowls his best ball and doesn't have to worry about fields too much and puts it in the area.

"There was nothing about 'put it on middle' and 'hit top of off', that would be too easy, it was just some energy stuff."
