SCG: Steve Smith now sits second behind Sir Donald Bradman for most Ashes hundreds after a masterclass on day three of the fifth Ashes Test.

The stand-in captain brought up his ton late in the third session to make it 13 centuries the Ashes. Bradman finished his career with 19 while Jack Hobbs is third on 12.

"What a player he is ... SCG specialist," Kerry O'Keeffe said on Fox Cricket.

During his century celebration, Smith also gave a quick raise of the bat to the Barmy Army, who have booed and tauned him throughout the Ashes.

"Note to the Barmy Army, stop booing Steve Smith when he walks on - it empowers him, it has done for years since Cape Town," O'Keeffe said.

Australia started the day at 2-166, trailing England by 218 runs.

Travis Head was on 91 not out when the first ball was bowled and pushed towards his third ton of the series, giving player of the series judges an even harder decision to make between Mitchell Starc and the left-handed batter for the honour.

Head finished with 163 before he was given out lbw off Jacob Bethell's bowling.

When the Aussie cult hero departed it became the Smith show, particularly when he made one of his more random requests and asked Brydon Carse at mid-off to move his sunglasses to the back of his hat to stop glare.

Sunglass distractions or not, Smith kept plugging away and brought up the century by guiding a short delivery from Bethell down to fine leg for three.

The centurion finished 129 not out at stumps while Beau Webster was unbeaten on 42.

Australia's final score was 7-518 with a lead of 134 runs.
