‘Cruel’ twist as rarely-needed rule decides final-ball thriller
Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee appeared distraught after a rarely needed rule cost her side dearly in a four-wicket Women’s Big Bash League loss to the Melbourne Renegades on Wednesday night.
Renegades batter Deandra Dottin needed one run to win from the final ball with the scores level at 154 at Bellerive Oval.
The gloves in front of the stumps. Kayo
Dottin swung and missed at Nicola Carey’s delivery and everyone at the ground readied for a super over to decide the outcome of the match.
But replays revealed that Lee had caught the ball in her gloves just in front of the stumps - a no-no in cricket.
The umpires then correctly called a no-ball, handing the visitors victory in a bizarre finish.
“Cricket is cruel isn’t it? It’s a game of centimetres,” Fox Cricket commentator Georgie Heath said
“A crazy ending to a very fine game of WBBL cricket.”
Hurricanes captain Carey had earlier top scored with 62 from 43 balls in Hobart’s innings of 7-154.
Renegades skipper Sophie Molineux took 4-22.
The Hurricanes are winless after three games while the Renegades notched their first win of the season to move up to sixth place.
