A shattered Rohit Sharma is lamenting a "disappointing" World Cup semi-final performance and his side's inability to capitalise on the Indian Premier League.

While a tidy Virat Kohli innings of 50 from 40 and a Hardik Pandya blitz of 63 from 33 lifted India to 168, the total proved far from competitive as England's openers inflicted carnage in a record-breaking display.

The partnership of 170 between captain Jos Buttler and comeback man Alex Hales is the highest for any wicket in T20 World Cup history.

Buttler pummelled 80 from 49 and Hales smashed 86 from 47 as England thrashed India by 10 wickets at Adelaide Oval.

"It's pretty disappointing. I thought we batted pretty well at the back end, but we were not good enough with the ball. We just didn't turn up," Sharma said.

"It's all about handling pressure (in the knockout phase). We have played enough IPL cricket to understand that. The way we started off with the ball was not ideal, which shows we were a bit nervy.

"You have to give credit to those openers too; they played really well.

"The new ball swung a bit for Bhuvi (Kuamr) but not from the right areas. We wanted to keep it tight on the stumps. That's a little disappointing. If you don't execute your plans, you'll find yourself in trouble."

The partnership of 170 between Buttler and Hales eclipsed the previous T20 World Cup record of 168, posted by South Africa's Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw in the groups stage of this tournament.

Right-arm quick Mohammed Shami was the most expensive of India's bowlers, leaking 39 runs from three overs.

England set up its destructive victory with an exceptional power play, hammering 0-63 after India's 0-38.

Alex Hales has vindicated England's decision to recall him from three years in the wilderness, with a match-winning knock powering his side to the T20 World Cup final.

Set a tricky total of 169 to win by India after a brilliant 33-ball 63 from Hardik Pandya, Hales and England captain Jos Buttler put together a record unbeaten partnership of 170 to run out 10-wicket winners at the Adelaide Oval and set up a showdown against Pakistan in Sunday's final at the MCG.

ENGLAND JOINS PAKISTAN IN THE T20 WORLD CUP FINAL!

In a fitting end to an Adelaide Oval demolition, captain Jos Buttler belts a Mohammed Shami delivery for six straight back over his head.

The English win by 10 wickets and complete the chase of 169 in only 16 overs.

"What an incredible statement that is from Jos Buttler!" Nasser Hussain says in commentary.

Hales hammered 86 from 47, including four fours and seven sixes, while Buttler whacked 80 from 49, including nine fours and three sixes.

The English just need 19 runs from 37 balls to join Pakistan in the World Cup final at the MCG on Sunday.

The England skipper pulls a Hardik Pandya for six over square leg, moving his side's total to 0-139 from 12.5 overs.

"It might seem a bit rude to say so, but at the moment, it looks like a contest between two boxers from different weight categories," Harsha Bhogle says in commentary.

The English are 0-98 after 10 overs and continue to dominate in the 11th over, Alex Hales hitting a classy six.

The opener pulls a Hardik Pandya delivery for six over midwicket.

"He's picked that up beautifully," Harsha Bhogle says in commentary.

"How well has Alex Hales played today!"

England is 0-91 from nine overs and play has stopped for drinks.

"They've done it very, very well," Mark Taylor says in commentary.

"Two contrasting styles, really. India came out earlier today ... their way of playing is to try not to lose wickets at the start and then pile on the runs in the end ... England's style is exactly the opposite: come out, thrash and bash."

Alex Hales knocks the ball down the ground for a single to bring up a half-century in only 28 balls.

"It's a terrific 50, this, from Alex Hales," Michael Atherton says in commentary.

Hales has struck one four and five sixes, and the English are 0-84 after eight overs.

England is making light work of the chase.

While the Indians were 0-38 at the end of their power play, the English are 0-63 at the completion of theirs.
