Cummins’ verdict on the loss
What was missing from today for Cummins?
“I think the trend from this game was once you got yourself in there were runs to be scored and you could face a lot of balls,” he said.
“Within the first hour really, the game was away from us. We didn’t give ourselves a chance.”
As for where he sees the Test side at the moment, Cummins still says “we’re a really good side”.
“We came here really hopeful and thought we were good enough to win, but we weren’t,” he said.
“We’ll have a couple of weeks to digest it ... overall, I’m relatively happy with how we’re going.”

Emotion from Simon Harmer
A beautiful moment for Simon Harmer in the post-match interview.
He was awarded player of the match which completes his rise after some time in county cricket to discover his best.
Nat Germanos asked Harmer about his years of hard work and being in and out of the side.
“I don’t think I would change my journey for anything,” he said as he struggled to put words together. “The person I’ve become, you know. So yeah, just chuffed.”
Marco Jansen finished player of the series.
World Test Championship permutations
So with that loss, Australia is now third on the WTC rankings.
New Zealand go to first and South Africa are second.
As for the ICC world rankings, South Africa is now second and Australia first.

It’s OVER
Simon Harmer has taken the off-stump of Josh Hazlewood and South Africa win by 176 runs.
“A brilliant performance by the South African Test team,” Graeme Smith said on SuperSport.
Simon Harmer finishes with six wickets for the innings and 10 in the match. What a performance by him. 6-15 finishes as his best career figures.
The post-mortem won’t be good for Australia.
Cummins’ stubborn stand ends
Pat Cummins has been given out lbw and he reviews straight away.
It’s pitched in line, impacted in line and wickets hitting is umpire’s call.
He’s gone, Simon Harmer has a five-wicket haul and Australia is 9-107.
Cummins goes for 11 off 90 balls. He gave it his all.
Katich’s verdict on the toss
Simon Katich says there was “absolutely no reason” for the Australians to bowl first at the toss.
That decision will come under big scrutiny for Pat Cummins after a horror final day.
You could argue this didn’t come down to the pitch though, just dumb batting really.
And he put the focus on Alex Carey with that point.
“He obviously didn’t watch Ryan Rickelton bat at all yesterday because he did the complete opposite and paid the price ... it was low percentage,” he said.
Cummins has a run
It’s taken 41 balls but Pat Cummins is off the mark.
He eased a ball down to square leg off Gerald Coetzee and gets some ironic cheers from the crowd.
Then the next ball, Nathan Lyon hits one through mid-wicket for a single but they don’t take it.
Strange.
Green’s concentration breaks
Cameron Green is gone!
He tried to dance down the wicket but was bamboozled by the spin and bowled through the gate.
He goes for 27 off 110 balls.
“That’s perfect, literally, you won’t bowl a better off break than that,” caller Mark Nicholas said on SuperSport.
Game. Over.
