Nasser Hussain puts cricket's big three on notice after sensational finale to India-England series

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has called on the big three of Australia, India and England to keep Test cricket alive after a thrilling finish to the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.

The series finished at 2-2 after India won the final Test by six runs in a nail-biting finish.

With the rise of the Indian Premier League, often there's been a spotlight on how committed India is to the red-ball format.

Hussain is defiant on how much the nation values Test cricket, especially considering Virat Kohli said winning the IPL was five levels below his best moments in the five-day format.

"They are invested, they're fully invested. Kohli was invested," Hussain said on Sky Sports.

"When great cricketers and great players like that not only say those words but backed it up for a decade or more than that before that, they have been thoroughly invested.

"It would be lovely to just look at this here, this week and go why do we complain? Why do we worry about Test cricket?

"I have turned up every day this series going, why do people knock this format? It is just so wonderful."

However, the reality of Test cricket is many nations struggle to gain a financial incentive from it.

Notably, the West Indies have declined heavily and South Africa are prioritising T20 cricket in their domestic scene. However, the Proteas are the World Test Champions.

Hussain put the onus on the big nations to sustain the format.

"I'm afraid other countries don't have the luxury that England, India and Australia have," he said.

"The crowd here, the crowd the whole series, every day pretty much sold out. Come in for 40 minutes today they would've thought, everyone came in, sell out crowd.

"But I'm afraid not every country has the luxuries or the luck that we have so we and India and Australia have to keep an eye on the future of Test match cricket. If we let this go, we are not doing the game a service to be honest. We need to keep an eye on this and keep pushing it forward and look after those that aren't as fortunate."

Now what many consider the biggest Test series awaits: The Ashes.

The first Test between Australia and England starts on November 21 at Perth.

Post-match after India's win, Ben Stokes referred to the series as "the big one" as he prepares to rehabilitate his shoulder.

Michael Atherton put it to Stokes whether England are confident on their chances in Australia.

His response was a simple "absolutely".
