Glenn Maxwell set to hand over Melbourne Stars' captaincy to Marcus Stoinis

Glenn Maxwell's time as captain of the Melbourne Stars has come to an end and the reins will be handed over to Marcus Stoinis.

Maxwell has led the Stars since 2018 but informed his teammates in January that he wished to continue playing on without carrying the title.

The decision came after the club failed to reach the finals for the fourth consecutive year, making the Stars one of two BBL teams to have not won the tournament.

9News Melbourne reporter Tom Morris confirmed the change on Monday morning.

Stoinis quickly emerged as the favourite to take over the title at the end of the 2023/24 season, having previously stepped into the role when Maxwell was sidelined with injury.

The 35-year-old confirmed his interest in the position with reporters in June.

"I would love to do it, I love the Stars," he said ahead of Australia's Super Eight match against Bangladesh.

"I've been there for what feels like forever and I've got no plans of going anywhere, that's a team I want to create some success with.

"It would create another fun, interesting challenge to add to the Big Bash.

"I'm just also glad that I've committed for the next three years and I can start planning being around Melbourne during the Christmas and New Year's period."

If appointed, Stoinis will work alongside new head coach Peter Moores at the Stars, who is entering his second season in charge.
