Steve Smith's early statement interrupted as rain puts end to BBL match between Sixers and Hurricanes

Steve Smith wasted no time making a statement with the bat when returning to the Big Bash on Sunday, smashing a six on his second ball against the Hobart Hurricanes.
The Australian Test star hit a single on his first ball of the match before quickly settling into his groove at the crease, with Sixers teammate Babar Azam watching from the other end.
Riley Meredith was the man to deliver Smith his second ball and much to the Hurricanes star's disappointment, he was left to watch his rival smash a six into the stands.

Smith was in no mood to slow down after nailing that shot, following his six with a four.
The Hurricanes were determined to put an end to the success story that all Sixers fans were waiting to see between Azam and Smith, but they missed a clear shot to do so.

Smith took a shot at attacking Beau Webster's bowling and sent a ball high in the air, falling in line with Mitch Owen in the outfield.
But Owen fell just short of the ball as he attempted to collect it, leaving it to hit the turf.
Smith managed to make two runs as the Hurricanes looked on in shock.
"It was a hard chance but when it's Steve Smith, you need to take them," Australian great Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket.

The near miss did not bother Smith, who went on to reach 19 after four overs, while Azam, who had a slower start to the innings, managed nine runs off 14 balls.
Umpires then confirmed players would be leaving the field for a rain delay.
At 4.30pm the match was officially abandoned.
Both teams will receive one point as a result.
