Run-out mars clinical Alex Carey knock as Adelaide Strikers lose to Perth Scorchers

Star Adelaide Strikers wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey was at his clinical best on his way to 82 runs off just 59 balls against the Perth Scorchers on New Year's Eve, but his innings was soured by one daring single.

When the Strikers were 3-73 at the 9.4-over mark, Carey bunted a Mitchell Marsh delivery slightly to the left of cover and took off.

And the dangerous Jono Wells, who had averaged 34.67 at a strike-rate of 122.11 across his Big Bash League career ahead of the Adelaide Oval fixture, made a desperate dash to the other end only to be run out well short of the crease by Englishman Jason Roy.

It meant Wells' day with the bat had ended on two runs and Carey would remain not out on 36.

Fox Cricket commentator Brendan Julian was stunned.

"Ah, the Strikers!" Julian said.

"What are they doing!

"It was some great work in the field. Carey hit it really well, great work from Roy. Then he knew straight away that Wells was at the non-striker's.

"He's way out."

The Scorchers went on to record their first win of the season, chasing down Adelaide's 9-146 with seven wickets in hand.

Roy top scored with 49 while Josh Inglis (44*) and Mitch Marsh (38*) saw struggling Perth home.
