Travis Head and Steve Smith score centuries in 241-run partnership to put Aussies in commanding position at the Gabba

Travis Head has continued his incredible run of form and Steve Smith has silenced the doubters after both men scored centuries on day two at the Gabba.

The first day against India only brought about 13.2 overs due to rain with Australia 0-28 at the start of play.

It was a shaky start for the Aussies, with Usman Khawaja (21), Nathan McSweeney (9) and Marnus Labuschagne (12) all falling to make it 3-75.

Head and Smith then combined, approaching their batting in the opposite manner.

Head, who came into the match off the back of a century at Adelaide, went close to a run a ball.

Smith on the other hand, who hadn't scored a century since June 2023, went about it more patiently.

Either way, it worked perfectly for both men with Head reaching his century first.

"He's head and shoulders above everyone else in this series," Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket.

"His glorious run of form continues ... it's turned the game on its head," Ravi Shastri added.

Smith would pass his milestone moments later in a moment to savour.

The reaction said it all with a loud cry for his 33rd Test hundred.

"Exceptional, it's been a long time, this would mean a hell of a lot to him ... he's a world-class player," David Warner said.

Smith's innings didn't last too much longer, with Jasprit Bumrah dismissing him for 101.

The 35-year-old's departure would spark a mini-collapse in the middle order with Australia losing 3-11 as Mitch Marsh (5) and Head (152) all fell to Bumrah who secured his five-wicket haul.

Pat Cummins and Alex Carey wrestled back momentum with a 52-run partnership before the Australian skipper was the last man to fall on 20.

Mitch Starc (7no) and Carey (45no) finished the day not out with Australia 7-405.
