'Was having a heart attack': Steve Smith throws support behind Sam Konstas amid whirlwind debut

Steve Smith has jokingly admitted Sam Konstas was giving him a "heart attack" from Australia's viewing room as he bludgeoned Jasprit Bumrah all over the MCG.

Smith, who has his own quirky technique, stole the show on day two with his second ton of the series which came after the heroics of Konstas on debut.

The 19-year-old frustrated the visitors with his ramp shots and confident approach, culminating in Virat Kohli's contact with the opener and 20 per cent match fee fine.

Asked about the incident after his ton, Smith had to ask journalists how Konstas handled before revealing the laid back nature of his teammate.

"I don't think much fazes the young kid, as we saw yesterday," he said.

"He was reverse ramping Bumrah and I was having a heart attack up in the box. But I thought it was all good. No stress."

Konstas' selection in the side came at the expense of Nathan McSweeney, who was handed the opening role despite batting in the middle order for South Australia.

The 25-year-old was unable to handle to class of Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the order, but Konstas showed their may be another way.

Smith admitted the selection call has "worked out".

"I mean, you have to have some serious courage to do what he did yesterday," he said.

"And you know that first over where Bumrah beat him three or four times and bowled some really nice balls, I actually thought he played them really well. He played down the line and they just did too much and beat the outside edge.

"And then for a kid to have the confidence to start 'lapping' and 'reverse lapping' arguably one of the best bowlers that has played the game, shows some serious confidence in the kid and real courage.

"It sort of swung momentum our way. I think you saw when he got picked, George (Bailey) and Ron (Andrew McDonald) said they wanted to see something different, show something different to the new ball.

"We certainly saw that, and it worked out really well for us yesterday."
