Joshua unfazed by 'putrid' sixth-round Paul stoppage

Liam O'Loughlin

It took a lot longer than many expected, but Anthony Joshua stopped Jake Paul in the sixth round of their heavyweight clash on Saturday afternoon (AEDT).

The two-time world champion stepped into the ring with the polarising YouTuber-turned-boxer and looked incredibly frustrated at different moments.

Paul attempted to grapple with Joshua whenever the British star applied some pressure, and there were moments it looked like a knockout wasn't going to happen.

Paul reveals brutal injury

Emily Patterson

During his post-fight interview, a visibly battered Jake Paul admitted that he believes his jaw is broken.

"I think my jaw is broken, by the way," he said.

"It's definitely broken.

"Nice little ass whooping from one of the best to ever do it, so I love this shit, and I'm gonna come back and get a world championship belt at some point."

The injury likely occurred in the final frames.

Rounds 5 and 6 saw Joshua land at will, connecting with a leg-buckling left hook and a series of punishing, downward right hands that ultimately set the stage for the stoppage.

Paul remains defiant despite one-sided defeat

Emily Patterson

Moments after his sixth-round knockout defeat, a bloodied by gleeful Jake Paul expressed his respect for the sport and his opponent while acknowledging the reality of the loss.

"Yeah, I'm feeling good. That was fun," he said.

"I love this sport. I gave it my best. It's f---ing crazy.

"I had a blast, and thank you to all the fans. I'm just blessed by God to be able to put on performances like this and big shows with Netflix. Thank you to all my fans and everyone at home.

"Anthony's a great fighter. I got my ass beat, but that's what this sport's about.

"I'm gonna come back and keep on winning."

AJ speaks

Liam O'Loughlin

Joshua speaks to Ariel Helwani after the knockout win and explains how he felt.

"It wasn't the best performance," he said.

"the end goal was to get Jake Paul, pin him down and hurt him. It took a bit longer than expected, but the right hand finally found the destination.

"Jake Paul has done really well tonight, I want to give him his props - he got up time and time again, it was difficult for him ... it takes a real man to do that.

"We have to give Jake his respect for trying - but he came up against a real fighter tonight that's had a 15-month layoff and we shook off the cobwebs."

Joshua then called out a fellow British superstar for a long-awaited fight.

"And if Tyson Fury is as serious as he thinks he is and wants to put down his Twitter fingers and put on some gloves ... step in the ring with me next," he said.

"Don't do all that talking. Let's see you in the ring and talk with your fists."

'Putrid' four rounds

Paul continues to go to the ground as Joshua continues to get more annoyed.

The referee tells both fighters that "fans didn't pay to see this crap" and the fans in attendance at the Kaseya Center are getting extremely vocal.

Very few punches being landed by either man after four rounds.

"The numbers are putrid ... this is just bowling shoe ugly," Mauro Ranallo said.
