What will North have to pay for Blakey?

Nic Negrepontis

AFL player manager Liam Pickering believes pick five and a 2027 first round pick from North Melbourne will not be enough to get a trade for Nick Blakey done.

Pickering believes the Swans will demand more for the 2024 All-Australian contracted through 2031.

The Roos are considering splitting pick five in order to have more ammo to get trades for Blakey and Nick Murray completed next week.

But they may have to get creative to build a package the Swans will accept.

They could potentially trade picks five and 45 to Carlton for picks 11, 16 and Sydney’s 2027 first round pick. They could then offer the Swans their own picks back as part of the Blakey trade and have another asset to give to Adelaide for Murray separately.

Either way, it will be a huge trade cost alongside the reported $12m contract.

What’s left to get done next week?

Nic Negrepontis

With a lot of chaotic action today, let’s unpack what’s left on the trade table as we enter the final stretch next week.

Zak Butters will likely land at the Bulldogs either this afternoon or on Monday, that’s a box ticked.

Zane Duursma’s stand-off between North and Melbourne continues, same goes for Lachie Whitfield with Carlton and GWS and Jayden Short with Richmond and Collingwood.

North Melbourne needs to somehow get Nick Blakey and Nick Murray both over the line now.

Will McLachlan has requested a trade from Brisbane to Melbourne, while Josh Goater is hoping to get from North to Hawthorn.

And the Hawks will likely move Aidan Schubert and Sam Butler to the Suns either this afternoon or next week.

West Coast and Melbourne have some negotiating to do with Jack Viney and Trent Rivers over the weekend.

Laitham Vandermeer discussions between the Bulldogs and Essendon are likely at some point.

Flynn Riley needs to be traded from Carlton to Collingwood at some stage.

And Luke Pedler is eventually moving from the Crows to the Power in a trade.

Then there are guys like Kiddy Coleman, Ned Reeves and Nathan Broad who are still up in the air.

A bit to do in three workdays.
