AFL trade period AS IT HAPPENED: Demons refuse to pay 'single dollar' if Christian Petracca traded; Pies' shock pass on premiership hero's son for draft
AFL trade period
AFL trade period: Day one.
How it works
The AFL trade period is a 10-day window where AFL clubs are allowed to trade players for each other or draft picks. It runs until the evening of October 15, and usually sees around 30 players shift clubs each year.
Players who have been with their clubs for six years qualify for free agency and are allowed to change clubs freely without needing to be traded.

Good evening!
Thanks for tuning into Wide World of Sports' LIVE coverage of day one of the AFL trade period.
Here are the confirmed deals from day one:
Jacob Wehr signed with Port Adelaide as an unrestricted free agent.
Charlie Spargo signed with North Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent. Melbourne received an end of round two compensation pick. That pick is currently 41.
Where does Clayton land?
Brad Johnson believes Collingwood are the frontrunners for Clayton Oliver with his time at Melbourne all over.
Johnson believes Oliver will provide a boost to the ageing midfield of the Magpies.
"That's probably where I see it. GWS potentially, GWS are probably more established," he said on AFL Trade Radio.
However, Johnson believes GWS coach Adam Kingsley could be just the man to reignite the premiership winner.
"I think Adam Kingsley would have an extremely positive influence on Clayton Oliver," he said.
Humphrey 'crazy' if he left Suns
Brad Johnson believes Bailey Humphrey should not leave the Suns after the club reached finals for the first time.
Humphrey has attracted interest from rival clubs and will be a storyline from this trade period.
"He would be crazy to leave Gold Coast now," Johnson said on AFL Trade Period.
"See out the next two years, you might have a medal around your neck. If he left now for Melbourne for a pay-day, that is the wrong call and one that he would probably regret."

'This will get done': Marshall trade to Geelong in his favour
Sensing a threat to his role as the No.1 ruckman, contracted St Kilda ruck Rowan Marshall has requested a trade to Geelong after the Saints confirmed the free agency signing of rival big man Tom De Koning.
Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Josh Jenkins was adamant that Marshall's trade request is a done deal because he is so confident that the move will be completed.
"This will get done. Knowing Marshall has officially requested a trade...if he was nervous about it getting done, you don't do that," he said.

Marshall is contracted to St Kilda until the end of 2027.
Jenkins is confident the Cats will meet the Saints' strong trade demands for Marshall, as the 29-year-old would instantly fill their ruck void.
Sun to join Bombers as free agent
Highly sought-after Gold Coast midfielder Brayden Fiorini is set to join Essendon as an unrestricted free agent after walking out on the Suns and snubbing interest from Port Adelaide.
Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Fiorini's manager, Liam Pickering, confirmed the news.
"He's going to play for the Bombers," he said.
"I caught up with him this morning — we have told the Bombers.
"The Suns put a compelling offer to him to stay. He liked the meeting with Port Adelaide as well, but Essendon is a good fit for him."

After being selected by the Suns with pick No.20 in the 2015 draft, Fiorini has played 123 games for the club.
Demons refuse to pay 'single dollar' if Petracca traded
Melbourne has delivered a firm stance in the Christian Petracca trade negotiations.
According to 9News' chief AFL reporter, Tom Morris, the Demons have made it explicitly clear that they "won't pay a single dollar" of the star midfielder's substantial remaining contract if he moves to the Suns.
The refusal to assist with the salary cap dramatically shifts the financial burden onto the Suns as they attempt to secure Petracca's signature.
Petracca's current contract with the Demons is back-ended due to previously deferred money, resulting in large payments of $1.4 million in 2026 and then $1.3 million annually through to 2029, plus marketing funds.
Morris says the Suns are willing to add a fifth season to the deal if required.
A potential contract extension would primarily serve to "smooth" the cash flow, slightly reducing the annual hit on the Suns' salary cap and making the massive outlay more palatable.
Melbourne's hard-line position ensures that any trade for Petracca would free up significant space under their salary cap.
Petracca is contracted to the Demons until the end of 2029.
Ugle-Hagan's Suns lifeline hanging in there
The Suns' pursuit of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan hinges on both board approval and the green light from the AFL.
According to 9News' chief AFL reporter, Tom Morris, the Gold Coast are currently inclined to offer Ugle-Hagan a lifeline but have not yet fully committed to the deal.
The Suns are still working through their due diligence, which includes several non-football-related barriers.
"It's looking likely they will give him a shot, but he's not there yet," Morris wrote on X.
Roos great urges club to strip Simpkin of captaincy after trade request
North Melbourne all-time great Corey McKernan has called for Roos skipper Jy Simpkin to hand over the captaincy, after indicating he'd like to be traded from the club.
Simpkin, unhappy with playing wing and flanker roles at the struggling Roos and after more midfield time, floated with the club his desire for a fresh start.
However, given he earns $1m per season and is contracted until 2029, there have been few takers, particularly given the steep compensation North Melbourne would ask for as well.
North list boss Brady Rawlings told Trade Radio earlier in the day that Simpkin would be returning to the club and that they wouldn't be considering trade offers for him.
And McKernan, who played in two premierships for the Kangaroos, is fine with the midfielder returning to the club, but says it can't be as captain.
He has urged the club to consider a new skipper, posting his thoughts on social media.
Essendon captain Zach Merrett may find himself in a similar boat after pushing for a move to Hawthorn, while West Coast captain Oscar Allen will join Brisbane as a free agent.
Will we see a trade on day one?
It's nearly 2:30pm AEST and no trades have gone through on day one of the trade period, just two unrestricted free agency moves in Jacob Wehr to Port and Charlie Spargo to North.
The Suns have confirmed a trade for small forward Malcolm Rosas Jr with Sydney won't go through today, despite it appearing near completion.
So despite it being an action packed day of news and list managers speaking, we might not actually see a completed trade on day one.
Will Brodie's move from Fremantle to Port Adelaide or Tylar Young's move from Richmond to West Coast feel like trades that could go through quite easily, but the clubs have 10 days and we know how often things get pushed to the final seconds.
