Sydney Swans star Tom Papley tested positive to a random drug test when he was pulled over by NSW Police on Monday, the club said in a statement.
Papley, 30, was also hit with a court attendance notice for allegedly driving with a suspended licence, having not paid a parking fine.
A second sample of the drug test was taken for analysis. The results of the second sample are expected to not be known until at least four weeks’ time.
The Swans said Papley immediately advised the club of the matter, and the club then told the AFL.
“The club will be making no further comment pending the outcome of the police process,” the Swans said.
Papley has played 216 AFL games for Sydney since being drafted to the club in 2015.
The Victorian made the 2021 All-Australian team and has finished as Sydney’s leading goal-kicker three times, in 2019, 2020 and 2023.
He was part of the club’s leadership group in 2019 but was stripped of his role after trying, and failing, to secure a trade to Carlton at season’s end while under contract.
Controversy has engulfed the Swans in 2026.
More to come.
