AFL boss confirms 'high level' talks to return sport to Olympics scene

AFL chief executive officer Andrew Dillon has outlined his desire for the sport to feature in some way at the Brisbane Olympics as preparations continue for the showpiece event in 2032.

Dillon's comments come after Brisbane Olympics president Andrew Liveris said this week he was hoping to have the AFL and NRL involved at the event.

"The very visible ones like NRL, AFL, and all the ones that have their own mojo ... there's lots of opportunities to put them on display," Liveris said.

"Exhibition games ... ways to really show off who we are as a country ... and doing that in a way that is simpatico with their schedules."

Dillon is fully on board with the idea, especially since an exhibition match was played at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne between a Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) team and a combined Victorian Football League (VFL)/Victorian Football Association (VFA) side.

"We've spoken at a high level with Andrew about that," Dillon said at the launch of Opening Round.

"The reality is there's a precedent for that back in 1956 in Melbourne, where Australian Rules Football was the exhibition sport.

"So I think our sport is a sport that should be on that stage, and we'll work closely with the Olympic Committee on what form that takes."

That match in 1956 was played in front of 30,000 fans which was won in an upset by VAFA with a 26-point margin.
