Essendon's extensive soft tissue injury list set to spark off-season management shake up

Essendon are set to "sharpen their focus" on their high performance team in what is setting up to be an off-season of disruption in wake of the club's injury nightmare.

A growing list of players in the casualty ward at Tullamarine has been a major battle for the Bombers this season with several stars suffering recurring soft tissue injuries.

Star players Kyle Langford, Darcy Parish and Zach Reid are among those to have had multiple stints on the sidelines, all of which were due to calf and hamstring injuries.

Meanwhile, Reid and Jye Caldwell now join Lewis Hayes, Nick Bryan and Thomas Edwards in the list of players who won't return to the field this year for the Bombers.

Nine's Tom Morris reports Essendon is looking to "review" their high performance team.

"No formal decisions have been made yet but there is little doubt that there will be personnel changes," Morris told 9News on Tuesday.

"This is all due to an excessive injury list."

While the alarming number of players who have come, gone or stayed in Essendon's injury ward has sparked concern, small forward Matt Guelfi defended his club.

"I think it is just part of footy," Guelfi, one of 17 players to have spent time in the injury ward for the club this season, told reporters on Tuesday.

"At the moment we are just focusing on what we can control, and that is playing footy.

"I've had my injuries and I am really confident with our medical team."

Meanwhile, in a more promising sign for the Bombers, assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa is set to extend his contract under head coach Brad Scott.

Morris reports Giansiracusa is set to sign a two-year deal.
