Jorge Branco

Jorge Branco is a senior journalist at nine.com.au, with more than 15 years of experience and a particular interest in world news, foreign affairs, politics and breaking news.

Experience

Jorge Branco joined the nine.com.au team in 2021 and has been reporting on world and national affairs from Europe since then. He also writes about major sporting events and lifestyle.

After cutting his teeth on the Sunday shift at the Sunshine Coast Daily, Jorge started at Caboolture News in 2012 and quickly discovered what it meant to be versatile. He covered everything from grisly murders and local political scandals to school fetes and the latest small business developments, all while photographing events, local sport and front pages.

Jorge moved to Brisbane Times in 2015, joining and eventually leading the masthead’s breaking news team. In his years in Brisbane, he covered some of the biggest Queensland stories in recent memory, including cyclones, high-profile murder trials, the Dreamworld disaster and the child sex abuse royal commission.

In 2018, Jorge moved to Portugal as a freelance journalist. He wrote for The Independent and The Telegraph UK, including important coverage of Portugal’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and the political and travel chaos caused by rapidly shifting border controls.

Since joining nine.com.au in 2021, he has become a critical part of the overnight team, covering everything from wars, US presidents, diplomatic visits and the death of the Queen to a library book that was returned 84 years late.

Education

Jorge Branco holds a bachelor of journalism from Queensland University of Technology.
