When a young photographer from Portland got a text from her boyfriend at the end of March, it was far from the romantic messages one might expect of a new relationship.

Instead, two months in, Shelby Johnson was being told she needed to lose weight - despite feeling the fittest and healthiest she has in a long time and weighing only 54 kilograms.

Johnson took to Twitter, first sharing screen shots of the message and asking if she was "overreacting", before explaining her road to body-positivity.

Naturally struggling to put on weight in high school, doctors couldn't help. So when she started gaining a few kilos in her early 20s, Johnson says: "I never felt happier and more healthy. I worked hard for this body."

"I’m at a loss and just can’t even comprehend how someone who claims to love me can say this," Johnson told friends on social media alongside the conversation between her and her boyfriend.

"The main issue is your gut might stick out more than mine, and that's just weird," he said.

While telling the mystery man that she may have gained 2.2kgs (5 pounds) since first meeting him, the "loving" boyfriend replied with a text even more offensive than the first lot [we didn't think it was possible either!]

"Yeah it's not like I haven't told you you've been gaining and need to lose anyway," he wrote.

However, she was surprised the tweet went viral.

"The support I got is amazing. I really thought only my few twitter friends would reply!" she said on Sunday, after going from 200 to almost 8,000 followers on Twitter alone.
