Wheel of Fortune contestant makes hilarious mistake: 'I just went blank'

A game show contestant in the US has made a hilarious mistake after he "went blank" trying to solve a word puzzle.

Will was competing on Wheel of Fortune, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, when he confidently gave the wrong answer to the phrase that was slowly being revealed.

The phrase was "Give yourself a round of applause." There were just a few tiles left to reveal during the November 11 episode and the answer seemed obvious.

Will appeared to know the answer when he said he'd "like to solve the puzzle."

"Treat yourself to a round of sausage," he declared.

After being told he was incorrect his fellow contestant Kitina provided the correct answer, although Seacrest then joked to Will "I kind of like yours better."

"That sounds better than just clapping right now," he added.

Wheel of Fortune correspondent Maggie Sajak spoke to Will after the show.

"Alright Will, we had a little missolve in the first game... that's okay, could you walk me through how you're feeling?" she said in a video shared on social media.

Will explained: "I tell you, when the lights are on, and you know, the stars and Ryan Seacrest, Vanna White... I just went blank."

Maggie father is former Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak, and Will said perhaps he'd find the answer amusing.

"But, if your dad, in retirement, is watching this show, maybe cracks a beer and gets a laugh, it was worth it," Will joked.

"I will make sure that we tune in that night, okay? That's a promise," Maggie said.

"Awesome. And I'm sure I'm gonna have sausages in my locker and police car when I get back, so we'll try and have some fun with it," Will replied, referencing what may happen when he returns to work as a police officer.

Ryan Seacrest then joined the video, signing a cue card for Will's family.

The video was captioned: "Playing Wheel of Fortune on stage is a whole different ball game than playing at home, but Will was a great sport about his missolve! #misssolve #WheelOfFortune."

Maggie later commented on the social media post: "So great! And shoutout to Will for being a great sport and for making us laugh right along with him!"

Another former contestant said: "He's totally right, I was on the show a couple of years ago and made a couple silly mistakes too. It's much harder in person than from the couch at home! Glad I got to meet your dad and Vanna!"

"Treat yourself to a round of sausage!! Omg!! Facepalmed many times!!" another commented.

"Actually all three contestants were a bit clueless," another said.

"I know first hand that sense of panic," another explained. "Much easier sitting on the couch!"

"I was SCREAMING at the TV!! That wasn't the only ridiculous flub he made!!!" added another.
