A wedding guest has made a shock discovery about her sister's upcoming 'extravagant' nuptials.

She has shared her discovery on Reddit's 'AITA' thread, explaining her younger sister and partner are due to get married in Dubai and her sister has "always wanted an extravagant wedding and is going all out on this".

A total of 70 guests are due to attend and her family will all "stay in the same hotel with them along with her bridesmaids (which I am Maid Of Honour) and groomsmen" for the four day wedding event.

The cost of the hotel, plus flights, is costing each of them £2,900 ($6,041) each.

As wedding details were finalised, the bride and groom asked the bride's family to borrow an additional £17,000 ($35,413) to cover costs.

The sister later found out the money wasn't for wedding costs, but to pay for the groom's family to fly to Dubai.

This shocked the sister, because the bride's family were expected to pay for their own flights.

When she confronted her sister about it, she was told they would be expected to pay for their flights and hotel stays because they "can afford it".

Now the sister and her parents are upset over the apparent subterfuge.

"My parents are aware and are very disappointed they lied, but have said they're still attending, but I have backed out," she says.

"To me it feels like my parents are being taken advantage, and if they [the bride and groom] couldn't afford to pay for both our and [the groom's] parents and his brothers and nephew, then they should have just paid for the four parents or no one at all," she says.

"And they especially shouldn't have lied about it."

The bride and groom keep calling her asking her to attend, accusing her of "making them feel bad and ruining their day".

But she said "the whole thing just feels… icky to me".

"Yet one of the many reasons I dislike destination weddings," one Redditer said.

"They're the penultimate egocentric events," they added.

"I agree. It's unfortunate that they felt the need to have such an extravagant destination wedding when a local, or closer, wedding could be just as lovely," another said.

"And it's hard to have fun and celebrate when a huge loan is hanging over head," they added.

"Imagine celebrating yourselves for 4 days, but on someone else's dime," another commented.

"I personally think destination weddings should cover the guests travel and hotels, and factor that in when comparing the costs of different venues," one person said.

"Wait a second. Not only are they not paying for your parents, they're having your parents pay for his? That's like a double whammy," one Redditer commented.

"I don't know if you should go or not. Your choice will have a long lasting impact on your relationship with your sister. Only you can decide if that is worth salvaging," another added.
