Spicy Christmas Take: 'Tinsel is tacky and we should ban it from the Christmas tree'

9Honey

Welcome to Spicy Christmas Takes, a series where the 9Honey team put their strongest, most divisive festive opinions out into the world.

I love Christmas.

Every year the tree goes up earlier and earlier. In fact, I managed to hold off until November 20 this year.

I love the planning, the decorating, the presents, the movies (Love Actually, of course), the music (Wham, of course) and the food (ham, of course).

Christmas is, as the Andy Williams song says, the most wonderful time of the year.

But when it comes to Christmas, there's one thing I can't do: Tinsel.

No. Just no.

I banned it in my house a few years ago.

Tinsel on a tree is awful and just so outdated. It's the parasilk tracksuit of the festive season (2000 Olympics, I'm looking at you). It belongs in a cardboard box under the stairs and not on a Christmas tree.

And forget about how it looks — I certainly have tried to — it makes such a mess everywhere too. And have I mentioned it looks bad?

Give me baubles, a Christmas star and a string of lights any day of the week. (Hmm, I wonder if I can leave it up all year...)

But please, no more tinsel.

Maybe that's what George Michael was singing about, or should be singing about?

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart (cough, tinsel). And the very next day, you gave it away.

Be like George. Give away the tinsel.
