With just 75 cents, a US schoolgirl has brought joy to her teacher and his grieving wife when they most needed it.

Price Lawrence was teaching his class on Wednesday morning, just days after the death of his father-in-law, when his pupils noticed he was “a little off”.

“When they asked why I wasn’t acting normal I explained to them that my wife’s father had passed away this weekend and that I was worried about her,” the sixth-grade teacher wrote on Facebook.

“They all said they were sorry and then we got started on our work.”

When the class finished and Lawrence began farewelling the students as they filed out of the room, one of the girls placed a gift in his hand.

It was three 25 cent coins - her ice cream money - and a note reading, ‘Ms La[w]rence, I’m sorry’ with a sad face.
