'Plastic moulded monstrosities': The fashion combination Shelly Horton can't stand

Shelly Horton

Here's the deal, if you wear Crocs and socks, we can't be friends.

I have never seen a meme that speaks to my heart more than this one. "See those little holes? That's where your dignity leaks out."

To me, Crocs are only acceptable if you are a butcher or surgeon, basically a job where you need a pressure hose to wash away blood at the end of your day.

When you add socks into the equation it's a hard no for everyone. They have no right to be on catwalks, celebrities and now most teenagers.

There are several celebrities who have been spotted wearing socks and Crocs, including: Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Post Malone, Arianna Grande and even Drew Barrymore.

Add to that a slew of international soccer players and we have a plague of Crocs people.

Well, the collective noun for crocodiles is a bask, so the collective noun for Crocs would have to be a fugly.

These plastic moulded monstrosities have always been associated with the promise of unparalleled comfort. They were created in 2002 and no matter how much they are mocked they just won't die.

In the mid-2000s, the popularity of Crocs surged and recently the brand has expanded its product line to include a variety of accessories, and here is the kicker… socks!

The combination of socks and Crocs has been embraced as a comfortable and casual fashion statement, and the trend has been seen in a variety of settings, from everyday wear to high-fashion runways.

Some people also wear socks with Crocs as a practical way to keep their feet warm and prevent blisters or other discomfort.

Some claim the socks and Crocs combo is also tied to the trend of deliberately ugly fashion.

Wait. What?

Yep. Tiny sunglasses, high-waisted mum jeans, scrunchies and bulky running shoes are just a few examples of once-uncool styles that have turned trendy.

In some cultures, wearing sandals with socks is a common practice for practical and cultural reasons. For example, in Japan, wearing socks with sandals – called "tabi" – is a traditional style and has been worn for centuries. Germans embraced socks and sandals when hiking mountains. Not for fashion obvs.

In Western fashion, the trend of wearing socks and sandals together emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. It was initially popularised by the "hippie" counterculture movement, which embraced a more relaxed and unconventional approach to fashion.

But no, today's fashion faux pas is all about an ugly trend? Does every older generation look back and say I just don't understand you?

When it comes to Crocs you are either a hard no or a hell yes. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. Add socks into the equation and tempers flare.

Just like Ugg Boots, do as you please in the comfort of your own home, but nobody wants to see that out in public.
