Why we won't get another photo of Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis like this at the Paris Olympics
We won't be getting another iconic photo of soccer stars and soon-to-be-wives Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis at the Olympic Games this year.
As the Matildas gear up for their first match against Germany in Marseille, captain Kerr is quietly recovering from surgery at home in London.
The Australian soccer icon ruptured her ACL in January, while in training camp with her UK club team Chelsea, and wasn't available for the Paris 2024 squad.

It's the second massive career moment she's been forced to sit out of due to injuries, having missed out on much of the 2023 World Cup because of a calf muscle injury.
Though Kerr will likely be cheering on her Matildas teammates when they begin their Olympic campaign this week, it's unclear if she'll be heading to Paris to watch from the sidelines.
She and fiancée Mewis recently shared a series of happy snaps from their life in London on Instagram, suggesting that if they do have plans to visit Paris, they're not in motion yet.
Mewis is facing a similar predicament this year, as she was not included in the USWNT squad at Paris 2024.

The couple made headlines in 2021 when they were photographed at the Olympic Games in Tokyo after the bronze medal match, where they faced off against one another.
After the final whistle was blown and Team USA came out on top, a disappointed Kerr took a seat in the middle of the pitch.
Though they hadn't yet taken their romance public, Mewis joined her then-girlfriend on the grass and leaned in close to comfort her.
The resulting photo became one of the most iconic images from the Olympic Games that year and Kerr and Mewis announced their relationship soon after, much to the delight of their fans.

After two years of dating, rumours began swirling that the pair were engaged in September 2023 when Mewis shared a selfie on Instagram sporting what looked like an engagement ring.
She and Kerr confirmed the news two months later in November.
