Why 2022 will be such a big year for royals across Europe

It's been a big couple of years for royals across Europe as they pivot and adjust to continuing their engagements during a global pandemic.

But if you thought 2020 or 2021 was the big one, think again — 'cause it ain't got nothing on 2022 for royal events.

So, get your calendars out and jot down this long list of things set to come for members of the British royal family, Danish royal family, Spanish royal family and Swedish royals, including Queen Elizabeth, the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Mary, Queen Margrethe and Queen Letizia.

British royal family

Probably the biggest item on the calendar for the British royals in 2022 will be Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

The four-day celebration in June will officially mark Her Majesty's 70-year reign as Britain's longest-serving monarch.

However, there is plenty more for the Windsors to celebrate and it all kicks off from January.

Kate Middleton turns 40 on January 9, with husband Prince William also marking the milestone birthday later in the year, on June 21.

And a royal baby boom in 2021 will mean a lot of first birthdays to celebrate among the Queen's great-grandchildren, including: August Brooksbank in February, Lucas Tindall in March, Lilibet Mounbatten-Windsor in June and finally Sienna Mapelli-Mozzi in September.

While August and Lucas enjoyed a royal first in November, when the boys had a joint-christening, it's thought Lilibet and Sienna's christenings are still to come at some point in the new year.

On April 9, the family will mark the first anniversary of Prince Philip's death and in August the world will mourn the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana's death.

Her Majesty will also mark the 20th anniversary of the deaths of her sister Princess Margaret on February 9 and the Queen Mother on March 30; her sister and mother passed away within weeks of each other in 2002.

The royal family will also be involved in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, being held in Birmingham in July.

While it's not been announced yet, it looks likely that come September we'll see young Prince Louis walk into the gates of St Thomas's for his first day of school, joining his older siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte who are already pupils there.

How the year might play out for Prince Andrew is anyone's guess, with his court case in the US against Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts set to kick off in January.

Danish royal family

There will be twice the cause for celebrations in Denmark in 2022.

January will mark Queen Margrethe's Golden Jubilee, a celebration of her 50 years on the Danish throne.

A multitude of celebrations are taking place in honour of the Danish Queen right across the week, with the main events scheduled from January 13-16.

There won't be long for the Danes to recover before their second big celebration —Princess Mary's 50th birthday.

The Aussie-born royal's milestone birthday is being celebrated in style with a number of events, culminating in a gala dinner held in her honour.

Spanish royal family

Super stylish Queen Letizia of Spain will also be celebrating her 50th birthday in 2022.

The celebrations for the former news anchor-turned-royal haven't been announced yet but looks sure to be a full-scale event in September.

Swedish royal family

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia welcomed their third son on March 26, 2021.

Older brothers Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel were proudly front and centre at their baby brother's Christening at Drottningholm Palace Chapel in August.

Now, the family will come together again to celebrate Prince Julian's first birthday, which is sure to provide us with some gorgeous images of the photogenic family.
