Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have been close friends for years, dating back to when Markle was forging her acting career.

Though she's now the Duchess of Sussex, the pair are still firm friends, with Meghan, 37, flying to New York on September 8 to support the tennis champion at the US Open final.

Now, Williams has spoken about how she reacted to show of solidarity, describing her royal friend and fellow mum as "amazing".

"She literally flew across the seas just to support for a few hours with a newborn baby," she told E! News during an appearance at New York Fashion Week.

"She is the most positive, amazing human that I know. Everyone needs to know how amazing she is.

"I don't know if I could have done that with my daughter at that age. But she did it. And that shows the kind of person that she is."

At the start of the match, Meghan was pictured smiling and waving as she took her seat in Williams' viewing box.

Williams ultimately lost the final to Bianca Andreescu, whose 6-3, 7-5 victory saw her become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam.

Despite the outcome, Williams is clearly grateful her friend came out to support her.

The support is mutual, with the Grand Slam champion regularly checking in with the Duchess during difficult times, particularly when it comes to unwanted media attention.

Williams attended Meghan's wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, and before Archie's birth told PEOPLE Meghan would regularly check in on her, when it should have been the other way around.

She said in December 2017: "I'm like, 'How are you?' and she's like, 'No, how are you? and I'm like, 'You're so sweet, but I'm really asking, how are YOU?'

"I'm like, 'Meghan, stop being so nice you're the pregnant one, aren't you suppose to have hormones, why are you so sweet?' But that's always been her."
