European prince marries his American bride in lavish royal wedding

A European prince has married the love of his life in a lavish wedding, with a guest list featuring members of royal families throughout the region.

Prince Dushan Karadjordjevic wed American Valerie De Muzio at the Saint George in Oplenac, in Serbia.

The groom is the son of the late Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia and his second wife, Princess Barbara. Prince Alexander, who is a descendant of Queen Victoria, was at one time 1374th in the line of succession to the British throne. 

The bride was born in New Jersey and has lived in New York City for 25 years. In a rather unconventional move for a royal wedding, Valerie chose to have a male bridesmaid – her close friend, Greek fashion photographer Terry Tsiolis.

According to the royal family's website, Valerie attended the New York Fashion Institute for Technology and has worked in advertising, editorial and public relations.

Prince Dushan also works in advertising, having attended boarding school in England and then university in Canada.

Despite Prince Dushan not being the direct heir to the Serbian throne, the couple's nuptials were as grand as any royal wedding.

Their reception was held in Belgrade's White Palace, which was built in 1934, and is located within the grounds of the Royal Palace – home to the country's monarchy.

It was hosted by the current Serbian monarch, HRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine. Prince Alexander decided against taking the title of King when the former ruler died, out of respect. He wished the newlyweds good health, a long and happy life together.
