Sarah Ferguson weighs in on the Meghan and Kate feud

Sarah Ferguson says the way Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are being pitted against one another reminds her of how she and Princess Diana were treated in the media.

Ferguson, 59, has written an open letter in which she calls out the "sewer" of social media, subtly referring to claims of a rift between the two Duchesses.

She shared the letter on her Twitter account, saying, "Bullying, sniping, bitching even the most appalling sexism, racism and homophobia are commonplace online. Enough is enough. Social media firms and all of us as individuals need to take a stand."

The mother of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who have also been the targets of mockery online, added the hash tag #HelloToKindness.

"Take a look at any website, and you'll see extraordinarily abusive comments aimed not only at people in the public eye but also other internet user," she writes.

“Bullying, sniping, bitching, even the most appalling sexism, racism and homophobia are commonplace - it seems that online, anything goes.

"Women, in particular, are constantly pitted against and compared with each other in a way that reminds me of how people tried to portray Diana and me all the time as rivals, which is something neither of us ever really felt”.

She continued, “It’s time to confront head on the fact that much of social media has become a sewer.”

Ferguson did acknowledge that social media can be a "force for good" but added that it's time to "take a stand" against online abuse.
