Photos have captured the heartbreaking moment seven-year-old Princess Charlotte was in tears and being comforted by her mother Catherine, as she farewelled her great-grandmother the Queen.

Both Charlotte and her brother Prince George joined their parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as other royal family members for the Queen's funeral procession into Westminster Abbey.

They were the only great-grand children that walked behind the coffin, and while Charlotte appeared to remain composed during the funeral service, she was seen crying when Her late Majesty's coffin was lowered into the hearse at Wellington Arch.

Standing alongside Prince George and Camilla, Queen Consort, Charlotte can be seen wiping her eyes, as her mother Catherine offers her comfort.

The moment was quickly shared on social media, leaving royal fans devastated.

"I didn't think I would cry & then heard the pipes start & then saw Princess Charlotte crying as the coffin drew up at the end as it went from the Gun Carriage to the Car," one person said on Twitter.

While another wrote: "Is Princess Charlotte crying? Stop!"

British Broadcaster Stewart Purvis spoke during Nine's coverage of the funeral about how the royal family must grieve in the public eye, including the youngest royals.

"The fact that today, Prince George of Wales, aged nine, and Princess Charlotte, who's seven, are going to walk behind the coffin down Westminster Abbey, first time they've ever been quite so involved – that's part of their royal training and therefore they kind of take it as part of what they have to do."

It comes after, a historian had said she would be surprised if George and his siblings were to attend the funeral service at Westminster Abbey.

Speaking to 9Honey previously, University of Sydney historian Cindy McCreery, said last week she thought William would go to great lengths to shield his children from an "excruciating experience" he understands all too well.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the children [at the funeral]. And I also wouldn't be surprised if we see them in a very limited capacity at her place of burial which is St. George's Chapel," she adds.

"But not, I would imagine, at the very public spectacle and funeral at Westminster Abbey where it's going to be just a complete media circus."
