Where the Cambridge children were when the Queen passed

Queen Elizabeth's death has left a hole in the hearts of her family, in particular the Cambridge children with whom she was especially close.

At 96, Her Majesty was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren including the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge - Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven and Price Louis, four.

Upon hearing the Queen had taken a turn for the worst, Prince William travelled from the Cambridge's new home - Adelaide Cottage in Windsor - to Balmoral Castle in Scotland where the royal passed away aged 96.

Kate Middleton is understood to have remained at home to care for their children. All three attended their first day at a new school after the family's recent move from London.

Later that day the duchess was spotted leaving Windsor Castle grounds, driving a car to pick her children up following their first day at Lambrook School.

The family had posed for photos a day earlier as the children visited their new school.

Prince William is understood to still be in Scotland with Prince Charles and Camilla as well as Princess Anne and other members of the royal family as the succession plan called Operation Unicorn unfolds.

As per the palace announcement sharing the news of Queen Elizabeth's death, Prince Charles and Camilla will remain in Balmoral this evening and return to London tomorrow.

Prince William is likely to follow suit, returning home to Windsor at the end of this sad day.
